Proportion in design refers to the relative size of the various elements in design. Proportion is the distribution of the components of design in order to create a sense of balance and harmony in a composition. Proportion is the visual weight in a composition.

There are three ways to use proportion in design(by size, by placement, and by amount).

• By Size: all the elements in the design has to be of different sizes therefore creating a sense of order and balance.

• By Placement: all the elements in the composition has to be evenly spaced or evenly balanced.

• By Amount: all the elements should take the same size o take up the same amount of space.

Example 1:

Here, the Russian dolls are grouped together making the image seem closer to the audience. The structure of the picture is in visual hierarchy, thereby organizing it, emphasizing certain elements and giving it a sense of order.

Example 2:

Here, the chick is made very large in comparison to the man in the image. It emphasizes certain areas of the image thereby drawing attention to them. The image will evoke humour in your audience.
